Let's start with the durability. I've had this camera for two years now and even though I've dropped it, left it in the sun, gotten it wet (with sea water!) and done a hundred other things with it, it still works great. It is impressive. But you buy a camera for the image quality, and the Elan II excels in that regard. I agree with other reviewers that you should upgrade to a better lens than the one that came with the kit, but this body will help you get the outstanding photos you want. This is the perfect camera for all skill levels, except perhaps the general professional. I was a beginner when I bought the Elan II and it was easy enough for me to start using it right away. Now that I've been studying photography for a few years, I still haven't outgrown this camera. It has all the advanced features you want. This allows you to work in either fully manual or fully automatic mode, or any combination in between. The controls are intuitive and easy to use. And don't underestimate the value of having access to Canon's full range of EOS lenses.
