I have a first generation SRS box somewhere, bought around 1993/94. Analog mode sounds about the same as it did back then. For use with Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 Earphones and Monster Beats bye Dre fully closed in-ear style earphones. Satellite receiver and analogue PS3 over 90W Buttkicker via analogue input via two to one 3.5 jack plug. PS3 via optical cable. They are then sent to the ProMedia speakers via a 3.5 cable. Bits connect to the ProMedia headphone output. Needless to say they all have their own built in amplifiers so volume is not an issue and sound quality is not compromised. In general, there is nothing special here. Depending on the source material, it works as advertised to some degree, but it's a far cry from a real amp. Obviously this will never happen and should not be expected. A standard analog signal has a flatter, wider sound that can be heard on most SRS televisions. The bass boost adds a bit of depth and is much needed with an analogue source, otherwise it sounds very flat through headphones or standard speakers. Switching to a digital source makes it very successful. Some games give a good sense of immersion [GTA4], others sound worse [non-DD tracks] than regular stereo, so it's just a nice bonus if it works well, and worth buying if you Spending hours playing the game that makes it work. . Movies [all Blu-ray DD tracks] sound more or less the same, with no real digital or analog depth. me. Just don't expect it to sound the same as high quality audio equipment. For those looking for a headphone amp, I think this is a good value for the money. Overall, those looking for surround may be disappointed. PS3 users should be aware that a 15 foot optical cable will not work without amplification. The included 6 foot footer is just perfect. I'm not sure if the PS3 specs refer to cable length, so that might be something to look at if you want to go over 6ft. Four stars IMHO for crappy wiring. I'd rather see a slightly different shape with everything on one end of the device [except for the headphone jack] and that doesn't live up to its hype, but I knew that before I bought it. It has very good build quality and type of work depending on the source, otherwise I would have given it a significantly lower rating.
