All right. I bought it to use in the summer and to introduce my grandson to the study of the states and their capitals. He just turned 5 years old, he has a great memory but. The pieces don't fit exactly, so they shift. I think if the name of the state and then the capital were written on the bottom of the board, it would be the best tool for beginners to learn not only the states but also the geography and not just try to fit the shape. I also think that couples who present them as one piece of the puzzle, like North and South Carolina, should be separated. Each state must have its own piece of the puzzle that fits into its territory. With the above suggestions it would definitely work better for us. But we will be using it as a teaching tool throughout the summer. The board itself corresponds to the description, a thick wooden base.
