Appears to be normal for the electrical

I had to fix a leaking sprinkler head due to a valve leak in one of my areas. I used this device to track down my sprinkler valves that were buried in the dirt and grass long before I bought the house. Close to the starting point, good signal. However, after about 30 minutes, tracking the signal became very problematic. Sometimes the signal seemed to branch off in different directions, some obviously wrong. After a while I was able to pick up a weak signal about 100 feet from where I started. At this point, too, the signal seemed to branch off in several directions and then disappear. After much trial and error and numerous attempts at digging to find the line, all unsuccessful, I found that when one of the false signals was correct, the total area of my yard was about 50 square feet. After a few minutes of poking around with a long screwdriver, I found my valve box just inches below ground. Oddly enough, I've driven a tracking device right over this room several times and the signal hasn't been given. In the end, the device helped me narrow down the range, but it definitely seems unreliable when I'm more than 30 minutes from my starting point. I think it's very unlikely that he'll be able to find lines as far from the start as advertised. However, it helped me a little.
