Unfortunately I lost my shirt button the next day. I can sew (in 8th grade Home Economics) but I was wondering if there wasn't an easier way and it occurred to me that there is such a thing as floral wire. I ordered a few, plus a pair of small needle nose pliers/pliers and a waterproof rubber band (probably overkill - see below), and the great experiment began. I cut the ends of half a piece of wire at a sharp angle to make it easier to penetrate the fabric - each end acted like a separate needle. Because it's a wire, I didn't have to loop it through the button multiple times. I cut off the excess length on the wrong side of the fabric, leaving a few inches from each end to twist the wires together, then I fold the twist and seal with elastic to prevent holes and scratches. (A thick rubber band works well but is awkward to manipulate - I'll use regular black duct tape from now on.) But you may be wondering, will it hold up? Well I've repaired two shirts and they've already been washed twice. The wire is still doing its job. Even if you don't intend to use it to mend shirts, it might be worth getting a bunch of this stuff. The uses are endless.
