I used a tapered stylus stereo cartridge to play my mono records from the 50's and 60's. I bought the '78 version of this car and was so impressed with the difference that I went for the LP version. The difference between this and my conical stereo summed to mono is significant. Because this dolly doesn't convert the vertical stroke of the needle to sound, my old mono LP plays much quieter. I buy a lot of used records at thrift stores and flea markets and some of those that show a slight wear distortion when using a stereo cart play this record without distortion. Amplifier or step-up transformer to get enough power. Modern monophonic recordings (e.g. the monophonic reissues of the Beatles) are edited with a stereo cutter. This car has enough vertical compliance to play with safely. I have the mono reissue of "With the Beatles" and it sounds great! If you have a few monophonic records (I have a few thousand of them) then it's well worth the modest cost. PS: If you buy records at a flea market, be sure to clean them before playing them.
