Review on StarTech.com 6 ft. USB to Parallel Port Adapter - πŸ”Œ IEEE-1284 - Male/Male - USB to Centronics Cable - High-Speed Connectivity by Bernard Her

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works perfectly. After some fiddling

Firstly it came very quickly with free shipping from Revain. My computer recognized this USB device as soon as I plugged it in. I first connected the Centronics connector to my printer with the PC, I was only satisfied with the device. I have never had any issues directly related to this unit and once I get over a hump my printer works great. The only reason I gave this 4 stars and not 5 is the lack of any guides or literature - no! If it really was just plug and play operation there wouldn't be a problem, but there was a problem. My computer (Win XP) always printed to the LPT1 port by default. When I switched to this cable, the LPT1 was no longer connected to anything, but my computer kept trying to print to it. It wasn't intuitive enough to know how to print to a different port. It took me 30 minutes to an hour to learn how to redirect pressure to this device. I have very modest computer skills and had to do a bit of tinkering before I knew what to do and how to do it. As soon as I redirected printing to this new port, the problem was resolved immediately. A small printed manual or web link would be very helpful and would be greatly appreciated. A few little hints would help a lot. I suppose anyone who uses a computer just as a tool without knowing how it works would have to ask for help to use this device, but there is no phone number or web link for a manufacturer contact or support or dealer. Recommend this to everyone but be careful you may need to seek help to resolve the initial pressure port issue. Also, according to the blister card, this is only approved for Win XP machines, so whether it is certified for Win 7 is questionable. Maybe the card is outdated or doesn't really meet the requirements of Win XP?
