Most audio issues I've heard of are related to their computer's audio settings, NOT driver features. I can't comment on how well the headphones mimic 7.1, but there is a definite improvement in overall sound quality between plugging my headset into the 3.5mm jack and using this driver (plus the extra 6ft cable - that's noise!). Plugging the driver into USB installs the firmware update (at least for me). Even with the update, my sound was pretty bad. To fix this: In the toolbar, click the sound icon on the right side of the toolbar (you can also adjust the volume by clicking the icon if that helps you find it). For me it's next to my clock, but you may need to click the little arrow next to the time display if you have a lot of icons here, which will open a mini window where the icon might be hidden. Either way, select the sound icon and you'll see Hyper X & Chat as the default mode. Click on this Hyper X chat and you will see more options. Hyper X Amp Game should be one of them. Select this and you're done! :-) Well I don't usually go into much detail with positive reviews but I think it deserves it given the reasons for so many bad reviews. This could easily be a 4.5 star item. He's currently hovering just under 4.
