Review on International Concepts BJ6TD Mission Unfinished by Angel Young

Reliable product with one big flaw

This is a sturdy table made in Vietnam from dense, heavy Parawood rather than cheap chipboard. I was very impressed with the milled, clearly written assembly instructions. The packaging was also well done; Plenty of hard outer pads and foam inserts to protect smooth surfaces. At the same time, unfortunately, the bottom of the drawer and the back cover were only 1/8 inch thick and too fragile due to their thinness. A 3/16 inch shank would greatly improve their stiffness and flatness. If that was the only downside I would still be very happy with my purchase. However, since it is not finished yet, I wanted to paint it. I read some reviews that said parawood tends to have uneven stains so I did a test on the inside of the drawer which took the stain well and absorbed a little more than you would expect from solid oak. Satisfied, I continued to color the remaining parts. The top, drawer and aprons looked great, it wasn't until I got to the pre-assembled sides that I got into trouble. Invisible to the naked eye, the adhesive used to hold the railings, posts and panels together was applied loosely and saturated with fibre, which prevented the stain from penetrating and leaving large, pale, unsightly mottled patches around most of the left connection around. Points. It wouldn't be so bad if they were limited to indoor surfaces, but they were everywhere, inside and out. I couldn't foresee that because all surfaces were carefully sanded and no traces of glue were visible. I used dark color to emphasize the pale spots even more and spoil the whole drawing. I was completely discouraged. The discoloration is so severe that I can no longer use it for its intended purpose. I intend to donate to his good will. I don't know if I just got a bad block or if it's standard quality. However, it's a shame that such a manufacturing oversight would ruin an otherwise very acceptable product. I have bought many unfinished pieces of furniture in the past and have never had this problem.

Pros
  • Great construction
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
