I originally used a BR-178-S (1/4 wave, 380MHz-520MHz) tuned to GMRS frequencies (462MHz and 467MHz). was and I was never satisfied. Although the 178 was set to 1.1 and transmitting fairly well, reception was choppy and the RX seemed to be short giving me "radio crocodile". In fact, I've found that my rubber ducky Nagoya NL-R2 performs better even though the SWR is 1.6. After replacing the coax with an LMR-240 and checking the connections it didn't fix the problem so I figured it was the cheap radio so I put the BR-178 aside and used the Nagoya on my cell phone in my Jeep. Then I came across the BR-176-S 5/8 shaft which was more specifically tuned to the GMRS bands. I followed the cut chart and the SWR meter didn't move on the first try! TX and RX have increased significantly. Driving this morning I went to my usual spot of losing signal to cut off and was told I'm still getting close. Wow! 18W 25+ mile repeaters are very basic now and my antenna is mounted in the hard top of my Wrangler instead of the outside. If you have GMRS I highly recommend these antennas as they are the best I have ever used with the exception of the 5.5dBd BR-450 which I use as my base antenna.
