This would have been much more difficult without reviewer Elizabeth B. She explained everything as clearly as the manufacturer should, so I recommend you to refer to her review. As other reviewers have noted, it's not universal, but designed for use with newer fans with a specific receiver type. If you have an exhaust chain fan, you will need to install a receiver, sold separately. The wall controller that came with our fan sucks. The light is hidden in the middle and most little fingers still turn on the fan. Stupid. I wish I could have just a light switch but it was a cheaper alternative and at least better than what we have now. We chose not to plug it in at all and use it as a wall controller. I like that these are AAA batteries and not the obscure silver button cells, but I don't like that I have to unscrew them to get to them. For pairing instructions read Elizabeth B's review.
