Excellent protection for expensive lawnmowers

The Husqvarana Automower user manual tells you to switch off the boundary wires and the power source during a thunderstorm. Good advice, but the way the connectors are made is not that simple and not commonplace during summer thunderstorms. Who dares to go out during a thunderstorm to grab the wires in the ground? Since car mowers, like dog fences, run via a radio cable in the ground, this seemed a logical use of the device. I was concerned that this device might not work due to the directional aspect of the boundary wire circles BUT it works! The mowers work great. I connected the wires in the same left/right order from the transmitter to the actual boundary wires and carefully tagged each wire with a code to identify it in case I had to shut down the system for any reason. The mower's charging station connects to the terminals on the surge protector labeled 'transmitter', which is one of the functions of the charging station. In addition, the mowers have a third wire for the guide wire to guide the mower back to the charging station. That one wire isn't protected, but it's also connected to the boundary wire at some point, so hopefully that provides some protection as well. The guide wire is not used in all installations, but it is possible to purchase another of these surge protectors to protect just that wire, although it must also be connected to a grounded AC circuit. Time will tell if this protects an expensive car mower in the lightning-fast center of the universe in Northwest Florida! I have holes in my driveway from lightning strikes and dead trees throughout the property that acted as ground stakes. We will see. If this $30 device saved $1,500, that would be a good deal right? :)

Pros
  • Do not install the unit if the distance between the outlet and the electrical service panel (control box/fuse panel) is less than 10 meters (30 feet) or more.
Cons
  • Big and bulky
