This shoe rack is VERY light and easy to assemble. Each shelf holds four to five pairs of my size 9 women's shoes and about three pairs of my husband's size 13 men's shoes per shelf. Flat shoes like flip flops can be turned on their side to fit between sneakers or dress shoes. The shelves are fixed, so you cannot adjust the distance between them. Boots or larger shoes should be on the top shelf. I kept my shoes in boxes on the top shelf and then stashed the whole block where my pants hang in the closet. Because the pants don't hang that low, they don't touch the shoes. Everything in the closet is clean and tidy. We bought one shelf for my closet and one for my husband's closet.
