I bought these lanterns to hang outside under a rectangular umbrella. I hung all 4 lamps evenly spaced across a table for 8 people. It gives off a warm, inviting light but is not too bright. They come with all the "strings" lying in the exact same direction. You need to spread them evenly and separate 3 lights at the end of each chain. You can't leave them under the umbrella when you close the umbrella. It's best to hang them somewhere you won't wrinkle them so you don't have to reposition the laces.
