This painting set is amazing. The depth and richness of color you can achieve with these stains would be difficult to replicate with traditional oil-based stains. I made a rich orange-brown dye that I used on some pine tables. Although the color range of these dyes is wide, finding the right color requires patience. It took me several hours to finally get the color I wanted. Here's my advice on mixing colors: add small amounts, only adding one color at a time, carefully measure and write down the amounts added, and then of course test each mixture on a scrap piece of paper that's drawn up the same way as your sample was prepared. If you write down the amount used, then you have a kind of formula that you can easily use to replicate any amount of your dye color. The application in the "Fill and Erase" method is very simple. I had some problems with my paint mix with the water based polyacrylic I was using; This could probably have been avoided if I had sprayed on a light coat of sealant before cleaning the rest of the fairing. Overall I like this product and will continue to use it on many projects in the future. UPDATE: Upon request, I'll post the recipe I used to create the orange-brown tables. The recipe below includes some of the amounts I used using 200ml water as the base and also includes dye to water ratios where the water amount is 1. Water: 200ml (1:1) Black: 0.2ml (0.001:1) Brown: 3.8ml (0.019:1) Red: 1.2ml (0.006:1) Yellow: 1.2ml (0.006 :1) I've measured everything in milliliters using graduated cylinders, but different units of volume (cups, fluid ounces, etc.) and gauges work well depending on the amount needed. The recipe can be adjusted for different numbers of spots by using published ratios or scaling the measurements up/down by the desired amount. These ratios should bring you closer to the color in the photos, but of course the type of wood and type of clear coat will affect the final color.
