So you can carry the PI in your hand or in your toolbox without worrying about bent pins, electrostatic discharge, dirt accumulation, pinching or fan blowing. Rigid assembly with good Allen head screws. It's well thought out and offers ample thermal mass at the top and bottom. Sometimes it's warm. It just shows that it works and it was necessary.
