to keep your feet warm and the pipes under the sink from freezing when it gets VERY cold) finally died after about 20 years. I've been looking for a heater with an internal thermostat for a long time and finally decided on this one. The price is right and the installation was easy for our electrician. It does its job well - turns on and off as it should (I think other reviews say otherwise). Yes, it's loud - similar to the noise made by our 20 year old fan above our stove, but no louder than the previous fan. I suspect you could find something better/quieter/more complex for a lot more money and a more complex setup, but for our limited use and needs, we're fine with that.
