Review on πŸ”Œ Leviton 8681 Incandescent Lampholder with Porcelain Base by Joel Young

It works, but be careful!

As some other reviewers have pointed out, this adapter may not be long enough to make adequate contact in your antique lamp socket. It almost doesn't work with my lamp. Two important things to note: 1. The top porcelain portion of the adapter is not large enough and has little to no gripping surface if you need to unscrew the adapter from a moderately deep lamp socket. My particular lamp has a brass body that surrounds the socket and protrudes a few millimeters beyond the lamp socket. The nesting part almost does not touch. The bottom contact metal probably needs to be thicker to allow for a larger contact area. When comparing the original Mogul with the adapter, it is noticeable that the contact area on the adapter is smaller. The combination of these two things creates a situation where you have to screw the adapter in as far and as tight as possible to make contact, which in turn makes it much more difficult to remove the adapter when needed. When I first installed the adapter I was aware of these factors, so I screwed the medium base test lamp into the adapter as tight as I could before screwing the adapter into the lamp base. magnet socket. I was hoping this would make it so that if I had to unscrew the adapter I could unscrew the adapter from the bulb itself and take it all off as one piece. After screwing the adapter/bulb into the lamp socket, the light didn't work the first few times I tried to turn it on. I really wanted it to work, so I got a little braver when I screwed the adapter into the bulb and eventually got it working. As expected, this made the adapter difficult to remove, but I was able to get it out by screwing the bulb in and out a few times and slowly loosening the adapter in the socket. If that doesn't work, I would probably unscrew the bulb from the adapter, stick some balloon material (for grabbing) into the adapter's socket, and then use pliers to unscrew it from the bulb socket. Luckily I didn't have to. After these experiments I'm pretty confident that I can install this adapter, screw in the LED bulb I want to use, and if/if I ever need to unscrew the adapter I can, albeit with a little ingenuity. For €3 it's worth a try. There are probably better designed adapters that solve these problems and cost a little more, but this one worked for me. Be careful how you go about this as you don't want a non-working adapter stuck in your vintage lamp!
