Silicone ring around the cup in the top, which is unscrewed. When we first tried filling the cup with water, water kept coming out and we found it was because the silicone didn't form a watertight seal. So we had to turn it upside down for better sealing. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but since the back of the silicone ring catches the cup (the side that was at the back and had to be folded forward), you have to be very careful when putting the lid on and taking it off, otherwise you won't be able to close it or water will spill exit. Since you have to knock the cup over to drink, that's quite a problem. Otherwise it's a nice cup and works well.
