Tested with all standard ceramic mugs in my extensive collection and none of them worked. The cups do not have a completely flat bottom! The device heats up when you find something with a really flat bottom: a little ceramic heater with aromatic wax really melted on the surface. I tested it with 2 Pyrex measuring cups for 2 cups of different ages. I covered them with rubber caps during testing. One worked poorly, and the other Pyrex's slightly higher crest made it useless as well. Well, all said, IF you already have one of the modified ceramic mugs that comes with its own heater AND HAS A CHIP BUILT INTO THE MUG to be cordless, you CAN use this base as an 'extra' seat. Being able to move from one part of the house to another without turning off the heat or moving. It heats your custom mug that you bought from another manufacturer. But you can buy other "heating only" coasters for $5 less than $20 of that cost that work with real homemade mugs too. No winner. I threw the box away so I'll just keep eating the $20 loss.
