They also seal the speakers well. Really too good. Sounds like door speakers want to use the air space in the door for bass. sooo I cut the cup in half so that the top half of the installed speaker (and the top half of the magnet) are covered to prevent water from getting in and they sound good. This is a 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander. This worked well as the door speaker holes are triangular instead of round. So the foam encloses them better. My suggestion is to mount them in their entirety and see how it sounds. If you like it, leave it. If you feel the bass is missing, cut it. They're not that expensive to replace.
