The (required) driver and software doesn't work at all so that alone deserves a one star rating. The application just opens a modal window with a useless message "Initialization failed". The Brother documentation acknowledges that this is a common problem but does not offer any solutions to it. But while trying to debug, I ran into a much bigger problem: the Brother installer installs the TWAIN driver file as fully writable (mode 777). means that any non-privileged user on the system, even a guest, can replace the driver with any malware and it will run with elevated privileges. It's a gaping backdoor that overrides all the most basic permission controls. Under no circumstances should you buy this device. And if you've somehow been unlucky enough to buy it, you should remove the software as soon as possible lest it be used as a vector to compromise your system.
