I've bought this counter before and found it useful. I wanted to add one to my work trailer so I ordered another one. It seemed dead. I could not turn on the device. I read and re-read the 16 page instruction manual. There is no mention of removing the protective tape from the battery, as is the case with many battery-powered devices. To access the battery, you must unscrew the back panel, not the sliding panel. As it's brand new I didn't want to remove the cover for fear it would void the warranty. I received an email from the seller. Yes. You need to remove the back cover and then remove the tape protecting the battery. My only other complaint is that it is very difficult to open. Radio Shack used to have a similar switch that was much easier to open.
