Not what I expected

I wanted to make something about the same size out of birch veneer plywood, but wasn't thrilled about having to paint or varnish it. So I found this and decided to give it a try. It comes in a small, light box. My overall impression is that the device is made of material that bends easily and the whole thing is covered in glossy white paper. A corner of the paper began to peel off and I taped it back. I had no trouble putting the pieces together, but you have to be very vigilant and careful as you'll be gluing everything together with double sided tape. I would suggest having a cup of coffee before you start as the four step guide is not as complete as it should be. Holes are drilled through the middle shelf, but this information is in small print on the other side of the page. You also need to make sure that the pieces are turned so that the adhesive strips face the back of the backing. You're instructed to 'rest' the device for 24 hours before using it (kind of a disappointment), and you're only allowed to touch it on the bottom. Finally, I understand the whole idea of green building. Designers seem to accept the fact that single-use furniture isn't going anywhere, and it seems that this unit breaks down more easily in the environment. And I know you usually pay more to help the environment, but I think these shelves are way overpriced for something that doesn't seem to be very durable. One thing is for sure, they've created a product that really can't be taken apart when you decide to put it back in the box and return it.

Pros
  • Confident
Cons
  • Makes me nervous
