They are perfect for my HOB water filters for my Betta aquarium. I bought them for several reasons-1. to reduce the filter flow. I have a small aquarium and was concerned that the current would be too strong for my fish. I don't notice a significant reduction in flow, but I believe it had a minimal effect. 2. Large debris that normally gets sucked into my filter seems to end up in the pre-filter sponge which is easy to remove and rinse out. This helps extend the life of the filter as it doesn't clog as quickly. When washing the pre-filter sponge, I recommend rinsing it in a bucket of aquarium water that you set aside when you change the water.3. This helps keep the good bacteria in, which can be quickly killed off with plain water. This leads to the third point, which is that the sponge itself can contain healthy bacteria. This can be useful for a complete water change, especially if the complete change coincides with a filter change. This can help speed up the tank cycle. The material is well made; It has a hole on one side and the opposite end is sealed as it should be. It doesn't stink of toxic chemicals and the sponge itself is soft to the touch, greatly reducing the risk of fin damage. I've seen some cheap/poorly made sponges that were too hard and sharp. Overall this is a good addition to my aquarium. The package contains 3 sponges which should last a long time with proper care.
