When it came out of the box the duvet was almost crispy I'm sure judging by the size it was made from. Washed - hot with some other white - and dried in an electric dryer. The open part of the blanket is very soft. The reason for the 4 stars is that the edges and center stripe are more tightly woven and have a slightly jagged feel. However, it may become softer after several washes. This is the perfect blanket for summer. I like to dress up when I'm in my chair and in hot/sultry weather the cotton and open weave are very comfortable. We had a cold front and I folded the blanket in four and covered my legs with it. Very comforting! I'm sure this blanket will be my favorite. I love reading in the shade with a light blanket over me and that's it! Although the duvet is lightweight, simply folding it in half or adding another layer makes it very warm. Even a sheet over a duvet increases the warmth factor significantly. Yes, I said sheets OVER the comforter. These are holes in the fabric that hold in heat when another layer is added. Without an extra layer, holes allow excess heat and moisture to escape. This is the perfect layered blanket no matter the season. I will probably order a few more in other colors. White is probably not the best option for outdoors.
