Review on πŸ“» Radioddity GM-N1 GMRS Handheld Radio, Noise Canceling Long Range 30 Channels Two Way Radio for Adults, 3000mAh Rechargeable Battery, Privacy Code, VOX for Camping, Offroad - Pack of 2 by Tyler Cooley

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good radio but there are a few things you need to know.

First, these are GMRS radios, not FRS radios, so a license is required to legally transmit on them. The radios are quite small for their power (3 watts) and are easy to hold. The antenna is only 1.5 inches long, which can limit range. The radios are pre-programmed with channels 1-22 for simplex (radio) and channels 23-30 for GMRS repeater operation. There is no tone programmed in any of the channels. A 60 second TOT (wait timer) is also pre-programmed, meaning the radio will automatically stop transmitting if you press and hold the PTT button for more than 60 seconds. To change these settings you need to buy a programming cable (a standard Baofeng cable will do) and download the radio programming software from the Radioddity website. This allows you to reprogram any of the 30 channels, enable CTCSS tone or DCS codes, change or disable TOT, add TOT alarm, squelch, adjust VOX levels, enable battery saver mode, etc. and enable channel scan if you wish . After you set up the program file, you need to write it to each radio. It only takes a few seconds. The noise cancellation works very well. A nice touch is that they charge using the included micro USB cables and chargers, so there's no need for a table stand, although the radio can also be charged on a table stand. The desktop stand is not included and the standard Baofeng charger will not work. There are things I don't like about radio. First, you can only change channels from the radio. Tones or DCS codes cannot be changed. So when you go out with other people you can't set up your radio to match their radio without a computer, software and programming cable. it's a pain Even my cheap Cobra FRS radio can be programmed in no time. Voice prompts are much louder than received audio, so you can turn up the volume to hear someone and then blow yourself up by pressing a button to change channels. Another thing I don't like is that there is no option to block the radio. If you accidentally press the up or down buttons below the PTT button and the volume is low, you may unintentionally change the channel. My wife and I use walkie-talkies like this when we are on vacation or traveling, it would mean that we would not be able to contact each other. Again, my cheap Cobra radios have a lock to prevent this and they're half the price. Finally, a Y-cable that lets you charge both radios from one charger saves space. I was hoping to replace my cheaper radios with them but they don't work for me as they can't be programmed from the front panel. I would need to bring a PC with me if I needed to change the DCS code to avoid interference or add a DCS or CTCSS tone to access the repeater. You can't even adjust the noise canceling level from the radio! These reasons and the lack of a key lock are the main reasons for the 3-star rating. Last note. These radios have a 3000mah battery but are 3.7V (1 cell). Thus, the battery capacity is 11 watt hours. Most GMRS radios use a 7.4V (2 cell) battery. Compared to a radio with a 2-cell battery, 11 watt hours corresponds to a 7.4 V battery with 1500 mAh.

Pros
  • Easy to Use|Just turn on and press to talk on the same channel right out of the box, and it works well with other GMRS/FRS radios. Secret codes can be programmed on a PC. The VOX feature frees you from having to press the PTT button when you need to communicate.
Cons
  • Concise Manual
