Review on ๐Ÿ’ป USB-Powered Notebook Cooler by Antec by Aaron Wagner

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works well. Good value for what I paid but some caveats.

I bought this notebook cooler to use with Toshiba Tecra. Love the fact that the fans are covered - I can use them on my lap if I want. Fans blow air out of the laptop - cool it well. I haven't had any overheating issues since I've been using it. Since I replaced the original hard drive with a much larger one, the laptop was overheating and freezing, but this cooler seems to have fixed the problem. In fact, I've never heard of a laptop fan running anywhere near as fast as it used to when the original hard drive was installed. There seems to be some controversy over whether the fans should rotate in or out of the laptop. I was concerned that my laptop would suck air in from the bottom and vent it out the side. There doesn't seem to be a problem using this cooler, which pulls air from underneath and away from the laptop. I read (and the person was probably right) that when you blow air into a laptop you also blow dirt into it. That's why I chose this one that blows air out of the laptop. My complaints: 1. Yes, the top is aluminum and everything else is plastic.2. The 3 USB ports on my laptop are next to the power cord on one end and the network cable on the other end. Yes, it has a USB pass-through, so theoretically you don't lose a port. However, the cable connecting the port to the fan is at right angles to the pass-through port, making one of my USB.3 ports inaccessible. The pass-through port is only for very low power devices.4. Due to the use of my two USB ports, I initially installed the cooler on a powered USB hub. I found that because of this the laptop keeps working instead of being in sleep mode. If your USB port configuration is similar to mine, I would suggest using a short USB extension cable so you don't lose access to the second port. The fan is pretty quiet. It could have been better, it could have been a lot worse. There are rubber feet that can be installed to elevate the laptop and create more air space between the fan and the laptop. The feet are 11 inches apart. I would advise your laptop to be at least 13 inches on the base so it doesn't slide off. Not sure why the previous review said they had trouble installing. There are 4 rubber feet that insert into the holes and then connect to the USB port. No rocket science.

Cons
  • Generally good, but...
