Not sure, foam is much less dense than my original foam blocks

These replacement Fluval foam filter pads are made from significantly less dense foam than the foam that originally came with my filter. I'm not sure if that's good or bad. I am disappointed that they are different and neither the listing nor the packaging mentioned anything about it. I can see how these new pads improve filter flow and are less likely to clog (although clogs were never an issue for me with the original foam); but I'm worried that they don't filter. Of course they will miss more material; and they have less surface area, which encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria. Overall I wouldn't buy them if I knew how different they are, but since I have them I'll try them and see how they fare. I can always buy regular styrofoam blocks that are the original density if that's too much. UPDATE: It's been a few months now and I have to say I don't like these new filter pads at all. They pass so much dirt through the other filter media that my filter is now actually clogged (which never happened with the older, thicker filter pads). So I'm paying more, but getting less surface area for good bacteria, poorer mechanical filtration, and problems in other environments because of these pads. I switched to a generic alternative that is denser and significantly cheaper. 1 star change (originally 3)
