After 2 weeks at -7 to 20 degrees, add some snow and some trash in the bag and you'll be fine. I figured if they were going to die a quick death, they would already have. I suspect it might be more difficult in the summer. At the rate we go I think we can go 5 times a year or two (each of my neighbors took one ;>) and technically you don't NEED to have them with the liners. although they are a great help! Highly recommended! A suggestion. If you find that the loops on your lid are at the top of the rim of the jar, tighten the rubber bands as follows. Place the foil in the jar with the top folded about 8-10 inches outside the jar. close the lid Now place a rubber band around the can below the rim and distribute the stretch evenly around the rim and across the loops about 1 inch below those loops. You won't have a liner to hold the back of the lid between the hinges, but don't worry. If you have the right size liner, it won't fall into the glass no matter how much you pour into the glass. It just works. On the day of garbage collection, remove the elastic band, close the top edges of the bag over the garbage, or tie the top like flaps. Say goodbye to the trash and hello to your still clean glass ;>) Update: It's July 2018 and they're fine. I only threw away two, and I only did that because I didn't want it to snap on me or break on garbage collection day and I lose the can liner before I was done. I'm on the third. I estimate that I will be using 1 every 6-7 months or so. My extra thick liners are only thrown away if something leaks inside and they smell horrible. However, they don't leak and my glass is clean. Very happy with it so far!
