Not for tugboat captains

If you're a tugboat captain, this unit probably isn't for you. If you're a cheap bastard like me and need an extra layer of security for your sailing day, then this block is for you. Firstly, don't be an idiot, this VHF is not waterproof. I doubt it's even splashproof. Salt water destroys everything over time, especially electronics. Buy a waterproof case for $15. If this $48 device is saving your life, it should work when you turn it on. The case allows you to control all controls and receive and transmit normally. An added bonus is that it now floats. Practice using it in a waterproof case. When I'm not using the VHF, I keep it in a dry case in a large JumpShip dry bag along with other essentials. This device is beautiful and compact. It comes with rechargeable batteries, but I love that you can use regular batteries as well. I have an extra set of batteries in my jump bag. For me, this is an emergency device. I haven't had to use it in an emergency, but I test it before every sail and it always works. I sail to get away from electronics. If you're going to have long conversations about where the fish are biting, I'd spend a little more money. If you are far from shore I would buy something with more range. If you are looking for an inexpensive communication device for a beach vacation, then this device is for you.

Pros
  • Clear communication - Burp creates water vibrations from the speaker grille to improve sound quality, while a noise-cancelling microphone blocks background noise for clearer conversations.
Cons
  • High Price
