A normal product, but they wanted more for the money.

Perhaps my review will seem paradoxical to someone, but I can not resist writing it about this model. The cry of the soul, so to speak. I rented it to test it, it's practically brand new. Unfortunately, I discovered several fundamental shortcomings for myself. I don’t argue, of course everything is subjective, maybe my hands are crooked, but still ... Maybe I came across a defective copy - I won’t say otherwise, but the very first impressions simply amazed me (already at home). Basically autofocus. I, as a spoiled 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM, almost fell into someone when he began to show his character to me. Yes, maybe manual focusing is relevant here, which I even completely forgot about out of frustration, but why such an AF? Sharp, you can play how you want. Picture. Again, compared to the 70-200 and 135L (worked all three in session), the 85 was my least favorite. And not only to me, but to all my "patients". To whom I showed comparative pictures of 85 and 70-200, everyone says: "Oooh! Why didn't you immediately shoot with this lens?" Of course, not diametrical opposites, but a clear difference is visible even to amateurs. 135L and 70-200 are almost the same. 70-200 has more depth of color, color and velvet than 85. Although, perhaps this is a matter of taste. If I find time to delve into the archives, I will post comparative pictures or take 85 again and test again. Outcome. Trying to reason objectively, I am inclined to assume that I really got a defective copy. I just can't believe the second 85 is that bad. Perhaps it makes sense to take another copy for the test, or even at another rental. At the moment, I still believe that the 70-200 2.8L IS II USM is the best portrait and telephoto lens in its range. By the way, it focuses at lightning speed, and it does not matter at all how much is on the other side of the world. Story. I used to think I'll buy 85, now I'll think about it. 04/09/13. If I continue testing, I will add.

Pros
  • Everyone knows.
Cons
  • Autofocus... In low light, it refuses to focus. It does not focus categorically on a monotonous background.
