Reverse connection

I'm not an electrical engineer but if you put a battery in your emergency radio you don't want it to create an emergency. I put it in and smelled fire almost immediately. The battery gets hot within seconds. I checked the wiring to the battery it was replacing - the black and red wires were reversed. Everything else about the batteries was identical. Good thing the first one never caught fire.
