I am mixed. It's really solid for the price and within a few months I was very happy with it. The tool rest is too high for carbide tools, which is dangerous. I've gotten it to work with larger projects, but trying new projects with more detail makes me nervous. I was also very frustrated until I got a Nova cartridge that held the parts and didn't have to try to hook the center of the spur. Don't waste time, just grab a cartridge. I've done a few things and they worked fine, but all of a sudden the banjo/grip latch knob won't engage, which is really dangerous. I'll call in the morning and hope to get better service than what I've read about. Will update as I get more information. Update: I called their support team and spoke to one person in less than five minutes. He was very helpful. He suggested taking the banjo apart and cleaning it thoroughly, and it actually worked. Good to know it's easy to maintain. For this reason I have raised my rating from 2 to 3 stars. However, I still have concerns that the handguard doesn't go any deeper. Update #2: Called Van again because the handguard didn't go down low enough and they didn't offer any help. Up to 1 star. I think it's actually quite dangerous when working with very thin objects like knobs/jewelry. In order for the tool to touch the tree, it must be pointing down. Creepy. That's a shame because it has the potential to be a really good lathe, there are just some quality control issues that need to be addressed. Since I don't want to get pierced by a flying chain, I will buy another lathe.
