I bought this item for use in a school garden programme. It must have been made as part of a commercial ship as it has a strong threaded rod just below the dial. The probe itself is about 4 inches long and strong enough to be used as a soil temperature probe, although it is blunt on the end. We use raised beds so the soil is pretty loose. I wouldn't stick it in hard clay soil, but anything loose enough will do. I quickly tested the accuracy by trying it with boiling water and a mixture of water and ice. It was accurate to within 1 degree Fahrenheit and repeatable. The dial is large and easy to read, and the whole block feels quite "heavy".
