The screen goes black and says No Device

I must have taken the lemon. I had a friend who got one of these and loved it. I connected the mini HDMI cable and it couldn't stay on for more than 10 seconds before the screen went blank or showed "No Device". The USB-C cable didn't work at all. I've tried several C-cables and power plugs with the same results. He comes back.
