The two things that would have earned these 5 stars are:A) instructions, not just useful instructions, but ANY instructionsB) better quality metal/platingHere's the deal folks. The first one I tried, after many useless youtube videos, went flawlessly. The second one, seemed to have a similar experience to those who have claimed these don't work or don't work well. In all fairness, it wasn't all that bad, and was very likely, partly my fault. I wasn't as abrupt and thorough with my pinch, so the gun felt a bit stuck and didn't release the back onto the post. Part of the plastic even snapped away as if the back had been secured, when it hadn't. I had to take the back out of the gun and put it on the post myself. This caused a little discomfort, but wasn't bad. At. All. And I'm a BIG wuss! The first one, I hardly felt a thing. Here are some tips for first-timers considering piercing their own ears:*These rely on your courage, commitment, and as one reviewer says, "brute force." These "guns" don't apply any of the force/pressure for you. It's all you.*Try to do this fresh out of your daily shower so your ear has a whole day to calm down before you get it wet.*Check the "gun" to make sure the post is aligned for successful engagement with the back. You'll see if it isn't aligned well and it is easy to adjust.*Don't just alcohol swabs your target area, get the post and back too if you can.*Use a quick dot of a felt tip pen or marker to mark where you want the piercing.*SLOWLY, GENTLY pinch the "gun" about halfway before trying to aim on your ear. You don't have to try to make it work from the fully open position and just hope it hits the target.*Remember to keep your angles in mind, otherwise you might end up with earrings that face too far in a direction you don't want.*If you're a wuss like me, don't be afraid to put a little oral anesthetic (like anbesol or orajel) on your target area.* When you're ready, pinch with conviction. Like you might when using a stapler on a thick packet of paper.*If you're piercing both ears, and you're a side sleeper at all, consider only piercing one ear at first. Do the other side once the first one is healed enough to sleep on.*If you are at all sensitive to metals, the gold tone stainless steel are not high enough quality to not piss off your ears. Both of mine corroded badly in less than a week (with no exposure to the salt water I mention below) and caused major swelling and infection. I'm not even sensitive to stainless steel or gold plating. Consider switching to a high grade solid gold/sterling/fine silver post after a week or so.*If your fresh piercing does get angry or infected, or even as a preventive measure, soak your fresh piercing in very warm salt water for 2-4 minutes, once or twice a day. Himalayan pink salt worked wonders for me.Happy piercing!
