I liked the wheels but the problem with the brake pads.

I love wheels, now my cycling experience is even more exciting. My average speed in miles per hour and top speed have increased. I have a problem with brake pads and what they do to wheels. The included pads have scratched the braking surface significantly in just 2 rides and the front brakes squeak badly. My neighbor, an experienced cyclist, looked and suggested not riding until I got new brake pads. I have ordered more pads but I am wondering what to do? And what can I do about a scratched surface?
