Review on πŸ” Klein Tools VDV501-852 Tester for Accurate Locating Abilities by Aaron Parish

I'm not a professional installer but looks like a professional tool

This kit does exactly what I need, it tells me what a NIC really is. I help out some public libraries that don't have a lot of budget for this kind of work, so I agreed to take the tools and put in some time. The large number of remote ID plugs makes the process much easier than using simpler tools like a 'toner' which you have to plug into a wall LAN port at a time. In a multi-story building with about 50 LAN ports, this is a significant effort. Using 18 ports plus the included card + test "key" gives me 19 points to map before having to move them to a different set of LAN ports. Mapping plugs just tell you which numbered plug to look for on the LAN cable at the end of the network switch, while map+test can tell you if the conductors are ok or if there is a problem (cross-connect or broken/ open) . Love it and would recommend along with an available toner and maybe an extra set of cards + test keys so more than one 'dubious' line can be tested in a single setup. Note that if you buy the card + test kit that starts at #7 and ends at #12 (VDV770-851), it's about $30 less than the VDV770-850 kit, which includes one key less and has the numbers 2 to 6. A A single key costs about $24, and you can order any ID code you like. So my map plug and key counts to 25, which is about half the entire building. If you have all the good connections, an included card + test key should suffice as they have additional features used for suspect wiring. I also bought a Klein VDV500-123 Tracing Probe Tool (about $40) as the wiring harnesses are quite tangled in a LAN room and it helps to quickly find the right line. Need something similar for your home? nope But when you look at a building network with many LAN ports, your time is precious. Simple math can tell you if it's worth it for you. In my case, I'm older, my knees creak and I lose patience when I'm forced to do something difficult; So, as I help out libraries in my area, I find this gear incredibly valuable! This pays off especially in the first library with about 50 LAN connections spread over 4 levels (remember the squeaky knees?). :-)

Pros
