My mother was diagnosed with ALS when she was 90 years old. It started with a disturbance in her ability to swallow, but progressed slowly. After 10 months, he had the choice of either inserting a PEG tube or dying. She got a PEG tube. The operation was uneventful and she healed quickly. A nutritionist recommended this product and suggested 4 feedings per day. The effect of the new diet on my mother was a marked improvement in her health and mood. My mom lost over 1/3 of her weight and was down to 105 pounds. At 90 and mostly sedentary, she complained that 4 boxes a day was too much food and suggested 3 instead. It seemed logical, so we did. At 3 a day she seemed fine. However, after 3 weeks it became clear that something was getting worse. She began to complain of weakness, widespread paralysis, and dizziness. Sometimes it was due to mild dehydration, but not this time. She was so excited that we went to the emergency room. There they found that her electrolytes were severely abnormal, particularly her sodium levels. It seemed very odd considering she was on a diet with such carefully selected amounts of vitamins and minerals. I checked the RDA values on the FDA website and compared them to the total she received from Jevity. To my dismay I found that with 3 Jevity tablets per day she was only getting 75% of the recommended daily allowance for a woman her age. She was slowly dying of exhaustion. The hospital has managed to stabilize my mother and we are starting at 4.5 hours a day. Gradually she returned to normal life. Unfortunately, the hospital staff did not monitor her oxygen saturation. One night she fell into a coma due to hypoxia. When she was finally tested, she had lost all muscle reflex reactions. Later that day, the ventilator they put on her was removed and she died within minutes. It's the hospital's fault for not responding to the low oxygen alert, but it's the nutritionist's fault for not warning us that without 4 Jevity tablets a day, she won't be getting her minimum vitamin and mineral intake. It was my fault for assuming both the nutritionist and the hospital were doing their jobs. I hope this information will help others avoid this tragic fate.
