After removing the former HS fur chain collar that was on our converted GSD it had outgrown (previous owners gifted it and left it to him) I thought why not try a leather/one chain to use collar martingale on it. I WAS WRONG. Trained in bodyguards and bite work, our pup was trained on the good things, namely Herm Sprenger stainless steel collars. You name them and he was there at one point. When we put his new collar on he took the martingale collar like it didn't mean anything to him as it really had no 'weight'. Every fix we did with him I swear he laughed to himself and pulled us like a sled dog or tried to choke himself with all his might which didn't work as there were so many fixes. The martingale did what appeared to be much like a flat collar. Then I went with martingale and strapping. He turned back into a sled dog pulling us, the only difference being that he looked like a super cool working dog with his harness on. After extensive research on a spiked collar versus using a chain, I finally settled on a spiked collar as it causes much less damage to the trachea than a regular chain collar. Haven't walked him yet, but after a few heel commands in the backyard, our dog really obeyed and resisted the urge to tug on that collar. The light weight of the stainless steel around his neck lets him know it's time to focus/listen. Of all the useless collars and harnesses we've spent money on over the past few months, I really wish I'd thought of a spiked collar beforehand. the more it became clear to me that as a responsible dog owner it is worth making this investment. As said, learn about spiked collars and learn how and where to properly use them on your dog. Now when I'm in public and see that the owner has misplaced a prong, I try to tell them to fix it and resize it to get a real sense of how the prong collar works. My dog's neck was 19 inches when I put this on him, it was actually too big for him. I only had to remove 2 links to get the right fit. I actually regret buying some extra links as I didn't even need them. Of course, due to 3.2mm, it can be a bit difficult to remove/attach for people with small hands like me. My husband has no problem putting it on, but I have a bit of trouble putting the links together. If I remember correctly, our collar was purchased from 101outlet and we received a genuine Herm Sprenger collar. Ours also came with a swiveling D-connector, I had no preference as to whether they were double o-rings or not. It still works. No complaints as always.
