These clips get very soft in temperatures above 70F. At around 80°F they are so soft that the paddle will fall out at the slightest impact unless they point straight up. When I say soft, they are really very flexible and soft. The paddle is difficult to insert into the clips due to the softness, they just bend inward. I found I had to insert each end of the paddle into the clamp, one end at a time. It's not worth it at all. There is no place on my boats where they can be placed straight. I assume this is true for most kayaks.
