Review on Retevis Frequency Channel Emergency Programming by Samiran Pusarla

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Worked great for use at the gala. Super small compared to other bulky ones!

I bought 10 RT22 radios for use at a gala concert in a very large museum. I love how small these radios are and how easy they are to use. I have used different types of radios over the years and these are by far my favorites solely for their size and light weight. In terms of their communication range, they've held up very well compared to previous, more expensive brands that I've also used. However, my usage will likely be considered short-haul. Definitely less than 1 mile at all times. Before the evening gala concert, I checked the range of every radio in my area, in a 7-story building and in a museum. Here are the results for each (FYI: All of these tests used headsets connected to the radio): Neighborhood Test - My wife stayed home and I walked a few blocks. I could hear them very clearly even as I turned a corner and pushed a few houses between us. I would say I ran a quarter to a half mile. The only time the signal was interrupted was when I was walking down a hill and the ground was interfering with the line of sight to the house, which included several houses in between. The signal got very blurry and then completely disappeared for about 500 feet until I reached the slope back up the hill. 7-story building test: I had colleagues with radios on each floor of our 7-story concrete building. Then I exited the building and stood behind the concrete garage adjacent to the building to shield myself from it. Everyone understood each other perfectly. Even the person on the top floor could hear the person on the 1st floor across 6 concrete floors. The only time I had problems with a broken signal was when I was locked in an elevator going up/down floors. The signal there was pretty bad, but I could still hear erratic voices. It wasn't a total loss of signal, but they can't seem to be used if they're in a totally enclosed concrete shaft/small room. Nocturnal Museum/Gala Mission: I had a team of 10 people in different locations in a very large, one-story museum. The distance between some individuals was the same, if not greater, than in my proximity test. I am pleased to report that there was only one loss of signal throughout the night and only one person's radio was affected. I'm not sure where this man was, but I think he might have been in the loading dock area, which would make sense since it was a cement box away from the rest of us. It only happened once in a 6 hour period so I think the radio worked great! I'd say the only issues we had were the headsets we bought where some people's mics and headphones weren't clear at times. But that's another product review! I took a star off the "durability" rating just for the belt holster you put the radio in. I see that they are not durable because someone can be a bit rough with them. They fit us perfectly, but I think the plastic clip that connects to the belt can definitely snap off with little effort. However, this has not happened to any of us. That's just an observation! I am sure they are very cheap to replace. As for the durability of the radios themselves, I'm very happy with their overall design. They are made of lightweight plastic but ultimately feel like a solid product to me. As for the sound from the radio speaker itself when the headset is not in use. I tested it and it works fine. I didn't really bother with the sound because it definitely had a sort of "radio squeak" when someone spoke. At a very high end of the audio spectrum, as opposed to the mid or low end. Such a fairly "tinny" sound, and if you have someone with a high-pitched voice it's annoying if the volume is too high. I definitely recommend using a headset. However, it is quite possible to use it without it and you can clearly understand the person. Overall I am very happy with this purchase. I will be able to use them again during the upcoming marathon which historically ends on a very, very cold day. I'll see how long the batteries last under such conditions. However, I had no problem with one of the radios going out for 6 hours during the gala. I like the lightweight and compact design of these radios. They're no longer than a modern smartphone and just a tad wider than one, so they'll fit comfortably in your pocket if you don't want to use a belt clip. I'm so glad I bought these instead of the bigger and chunkier models and everyone on my team agreed!

Pros
  • Radio with Large Belt Clips; can be more tightly attached to clothing or belts; reliable and durable; easy to remove and install
Cons
  • Something else
