I had a small signal issue communicating with other people while trail riding - signal drop out. I needed an external antenna, but I didn't need a very tall pole so the car could easily get in and out of the garage door. That's perfect and now we're getting a pretty good range. I cut off the UHF connector and installed a BNC connector - on the portable device, instead of a portable antenna, I installed an adapter from BNC female to SMA male. I should note that the portable sits low under our feet and connects to our intercom system via a headset. That's basically why we had such a low signal level. The BNC connector allows me to easily pull out the PDA to charge without much effort.
