Disappointing

My first set of tools was the iFixit Manta. In high school, I learned not to skimp on tools, especially precision screwdriver sets, when working with electronics. So when I bought my first tool kit I paid a premium and went to iFixit and have been using one of these ever since, I even got it and fix it. About Tech Now I had a friend I wanted to fix a MacBook Pro with and I needed an extra set of precision screwdriver sets. How comfortable this thing was. I also wanted to live with these tools to see what would happen if I got cheaper with my ifixit.TLDR and I'm glad I didn't. It sucks. Now, before I start criticizing this, let's talk about the good things first. I've carried my Pro Tech with me since I was rummaging through the bins at my university before the pandemic and I've often had to have a set of tools with me at all times. Pro Tech isn't the smallest, so it would be nice to have something smaller. This thing has everything I need plus a spatula, tweezers and even a brush. The spudgers and guitar picks were a bit cheap, to the point where I tried out the guitar picks and immediately put them back in their little zipped pouches so I didn't have to use them unnecessarily (I have extra spudgers and I usually use them). them instead). Spudgers are a bit sharp and cheap, but I really like them when they're sharp and they do the job. Tweezers are just as good as iFixit. A bit tricky about the body, the bits, you push on the top and the whole tray with the bits "pops out", there is a spring loaded latch on the bottom. The downside of this design is that you can't use the lid as a screw control compartment, but it's very convenient. The bits themselves are decent too, and are held in place with a magnet rather than a clip, so aren't difficult to pry out. These are the reasons I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. I have nothing to say, let's get on with why I hate this thing. #1. It's a bit missing. Remember when I said I needed my MacBook repaired? Well it's a Retina Macbook Pro 15 so I needed Pentalopes. However, instead of getting the P5 pentalope as I expected, this bit was missing. Instead, a T2 Torx was in its place. They had the P2 and P6 pentalopes, but were particularly lacking in P5. This is frankly unacceptable, and while this may just be an issue with my set, I mean it. The point of these electronic repair precision screwdriver sets is to have "anti-repair" bits to use when needed. #2. The actual part of the screwdriver, not the bit, is too flimsy. It's the same length as the iFixit, but the iFixit is thicker, making it easier to grip and twist. It has a spinning cap on the end but it's too flimsy to spin and the aluminum feels very light and really hard to get a hold of. This makes it more difficult to apply force and screw in tighter screws and makes it easier to remove the screw. Frankly, they were inconvenient to use. #3. The carry case has velcro straps sewn in such a way that it is very difficult to "buckle" the entire set. I can't tightly secure the kit and its contents with the velcro it has right now. I think they designed it so you could fit more stuff in your tote bag, but that seems like such an oversight. I can turn the thing upside down and one of the tweezers falls out because everything is loose. I don't put my spudgers in the side mesh pocket, but I suspect they'll fall out even if I shake them just a little bit (not really, they just fall out right away if you turn the carrying case over to try and tape them with Velcro ). together.) So I end up hating this thing even though I tried to like it even if it has a stupid design. I mean I can sew velcro on it, I can try to ignore bad screwdrivers, but the lack of a pentalope really killed this thing for me. I know I refer to iFixit a lot, but part of it was a hindsight experiment where I saved money by not getting the iFixit kit and based on the experiences I had with that kit I'm glad I didn't. Overall this is useful, I just hope other devices don't miss any important bits.

Pros
  • Magnet Bits: Made from S2 (HRC58-62) steel which is hard and durable.; Easily magnetized bits improve handling of tiny electronics screws
Cons
  • unreliable
