My fireplace has a wood burner insert that has a small clearance from the hearth to the bottom of the appliance. Well I was wondering why geckos and crawling insects infiltrate my "well closed" house. I even have a window screen to cover any vents to keep critters out. I have OCD when it comes to insects living with me. The seller/company advised me to use #4 for this purpose. I love geckos and when I see one of these wonderful creatures I carefully put them in a box and take them outside. I finally figured out they got inside by climbing up the outside chimney leading to the hearth and bottom of the wood burner insert! Problem solved with these #4 steel wool pads. I put them under the liner where there was a 1/4" space and no critters! I guess pest control companies who charge for hand and foot inspections will never realize this could be an entryway. Sorry critters there are no more welcome signs but I'm saving your life! Highly recommend and the price is low.
