Fortunately I don't think they are needed anymore. I bought a couple of these on the recommendation of a mechanic who was repairing my lightning damaged fridge. It didn't matter that the fridge was on a GFCI outlet. The impact was indirect damage to a refrigerator, a garage door opener motor, a sprinkler system control, and two televisions (out of four). Why it was selective damage I have no idea. He recommended a single-output, 900-joule unit with no additional outputs, particularly for instrumental applications. These correspond to the guidelines. Now I have them on all devices. I use various devices for computers, TVs, phones, etc. Soon I will install a common house unit in the switch box; but it is much more expensive than these individual devices. Apart from the repair/replacement costs, a huge circumstance that could have been avoided with a little more foresight.
