Review on πŸ“· Samsung SCM105 MPEG4 Sports Camcorder - Discontinued Manufacturer's 10x Optical Zoom by Lance Foster

Poor video quality, ergonomics

Camera received yesterday, returned today. This is my first digital video camera, the previous one was VHS-C. I digitized all my old VHS tapes and burned them to DVD and the quality is ok. The MPEG4 quality of this camera is lower and I expected better. Even with the highest quality settings, the video quality still leaves a lot to be desired. It also has trouble getting and holding focus when objects are moving. Another issue is ergonomics. Placing your finger in front of the lens is very easy. The zoom switch seems to be conveniently located, but when you press it you inevitably have to grab it and the camera moves around you. I think that's the price you pay for such a small camera. I also couldn't get it to work with any of my USB file transfer computers. However, he worked with two others. With 512MB of internal memory, you'll get about 12 minutes of top-quality video (if you can call it that). You need memory cards to expand your recording possibilities. They're not cheap, but unlike tapes, you can reuse them after resetting your files. According to the manual, the battery should last at least 60 minutes. I only charged it once and it was dead in less than half that time. Of course, by then I had full internal storage anyway. I have looked for replacement batteries but they are not available yet. Another problem: it doesn't work with memory cards larger than 1GB. I didn't know about it until I read the instructions. The manual says this "might" not work, which I understand, don't call us about it. I ordered a 2GB stick, now it's going back too. I'll wait for 3CCD JVC Everio.

Pros
  • 6-in-1 features
Cons
  • Waiting too long

Bad feature layout... Opt for a Sanyo Xacti instead
