This is strange. I had an old computer with a VGA output that I needed to connect to a new 1080p monitor with a DVI cable. So I needed a male VGA and a female DVI (ie this thing) so I could plug the adapter into the back of the computer and run a standard DVI-to-DVI cable from the adapter to the monitor. Well, before I ordered this converter, I had a VGA Female to DVI Male Converter. So I attached this converter to the back of the monitor and connected a standard VGA to VGA cable from the computer to the adapter attached to the monitor. It worked fine. However, I wanted the adapter to be on the computer and not the monitor (for optics and less strain on the monitor port). So I bought this adapter. This setup didn't work; no signal to monitor. It should be exactly the same as with the adapter on the other end, but for some reason it didn't work. I don't know why or why. I don't know if it's the adapter. Just one of those computing situations where the time it takes to understand and solve a problem isn't worth it considering I have something that works. YMMV
