I have never used them with a ring. This is too cumbersome, especially if you are embroidering a pattern with more than 53 threads! As you can see in the photo I used a shoe box for this because of the amount of thread. I put a piece of styrofoam between the pockets and used it vertically instead of horizontally. When I'm working on a small project I use a small basket and sometimes a plastic drawer insert. Whatever works. If you want, you can stand up the packaging and still see the labels. I use anchor threads so the marks are big. I recently bought some blue 1/2 x 3/4 labels and handwritten them in DMC colors. Hope this helps - don't use the ring!
